Triploid Snapdragons (Chihaya Series)
A Japanese group (Wada, K., Taniguchi, T., Hirooka, T. from
Nihon Nohyaku Co., Ltd., Kawachi-nagano, Osaka 586, Japan and Uemoto S.
from Oita Junior College, Oita, Oita 870, Japan) has produced triploid
snapdragon varieties,
named Chihaya, by crossing diploid and autotetraploid lines.
There is a fine
but your browser has to understand Japanese fonts.
These flowers
combine characteristics from diploids and tetraploids, but show very low
seed fertility and have to be propagated via vegetative cuttings.
These triploids show large flowers, long inflorescences and thick stems,
making them a favorable breed for use as cut flowers.
The plants have been presented on the XXIVth International Horticultural
Congress in 1994.
